In Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Earth is once again under attack from a powerful extraterrestrial force. Set two decades after the first invasion, humanity has united and rebuilt its cities with advanced technology salvaged from the previous attack. The nations of the world have collaborated on a global defense system called the Earth Space Defense (ESD) to prepare for any future threats. Using recovered alien technology, the ESD has built a massive defense program on the Moon.

As mankind celebrates the twentieth anniversary of their independence, a new, even stronger extraterrestrial force appears on Earth. With unprecedented strength and destructive capabilities, this enemy threatens to annihilate humanity once and for all.
